Our Approach to Sustainability

World Leading ‘Net Zero’ Steelmaking Coal

WCM believes that the social licence to construct and operate Woodhouse Colliery is of utmost importance and takes community responsibilities very seriously. Our commitment to carbon offsetting is a core part of our Corporate Social Responsibility policy and will form a key element of the WCM Foundation.

WCM has worked with the local community for more than eight years, with extensive engagement events and outreach – including newsletters and social media content. We will continue to fully engage with the local community and shall promote a series of funded local schemes and initiatives over the life of the mine.

We will adhere to the Zero Harm policy across all of our activities from safety, environment, personal wellbeing and community support. We will share publicly our performance against our critical targets.

Woodhouse Colliery will be the lowest impact metallurgical coal mine in the world, setting the standard for all other projects to seek to meet. This includes the most advanced methane elimination measures to remove at least 95% of all methane entering the atmosphere.

As well as ecological gain (brownfield site redevelopment, treeplanting and reclamation) WCM will work with local landowners in Cumbria to establish an extensive sustainable forestry development, to ensure local offsetting for any residual greenhouse gas emissions that cannot be mitigated. This will generate additional jobs in supportive green industries in Cumbria.
Our Zero Harm commitments will drive the highest standards of Health & Safety across all of our activities. This will include health screening, training & skills development, with a dedicated mine rescue capability and on-site healthcare professionals and facilities.
